Christmas is almost here!! The beautiful nativity set and Christmas village line the shelves once again of our living room, the scents of cinnamon and spice fills our home. The stockings are hung on the mantel. Cookie baking has begun, and the tree is up. It has been a magical time decorating and celebrating with our kids. Holiday parties to enjoy, and time spent with loved ones, are all things I eagerly anticipate. But that “silent night” we talk about in the song, can feel so foreign to the activity leading up to the actual day of Christmas.
De-Stress This Christmas
Though, I’ve taken major steps over the last few years to scale back so that Christmas time is WAY less stressful, I know that feeling. A million things to do and places to be and just not enough time to do it all! Well, amidst this hustle and bustle friend, may I invite you to join me in something super easy to keep our hearts and minds centered on Christ? I find that when we have been more intentional to make Chrismtas more focused about Jesus' birth in our home, and cut out many of the "extras," things have been way less stressful and hectic.
A few years ago our small group decided to memorize Mary’s song found in Luke 1. This beautiful passage has become an absolute favorite of mine. I love to recite it each Christmas now, and throughout other parts of the year as well, because it’s just full of such wonderful theology. Do I have the ending perfectly memorized? Not yet, but goals my friend, goals. Will you join me?
Mary's Song
Luke 1:46-56 (ESV) is the passage I recite. It’s sung by Mary when she visits her cousin Elizabeth, also pregnant with John the Baptist. In what would surely have been a socially difficult time for Mary, due to speculations on her un-wed pregnancy, she instead praises God!
I have been wanting to write out the passage on our glass slider, like I do our son’s memory verses, which, if you haven’t checked out my post on that you can do so here, but it’s about 10 verses long, so it might take up the whole door. Instead, I thought of making a FREE printable, one that’s pretty, and can be set out at Christmas time to read and refer to when memorizing (see link below). You could even print it out, frame it and set it up with your Christmas decor.
The words of this song are just beautiful, spoken from the heart. They remind us of the character of God, and our place before Him. I hope you will join me this Christmas in memorizing and mediating on the words of Mary as we worship God. And if you are feeling stress from this season, I pray that God uses this time in His word to refresh your spirit and fill you with His peace that surpasses all understanding (Phil. 4:7 ESV).
Are you with me? Let me know in the comments below if you are going to memorize this passage with me this Christmas!
~Merry Christmas, friend~
